Indian-origin U.S. Congressman Ami Bera on Friday called for a peaceful solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and said both Israelis and Palestinians have the right to live in peace and dignity.

While I firmly believe that Israel has the right to exist and defend itself, innocent Palestinians also have the right to live in peace and dignity,” Bera said in a video message.

Bera, who is a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, also called for an immediate pause in the fighting to allow for the delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians.

“We need an immediate pause in the fighting in order to get needed humanitarian aid, food, water and medicine to civilians in distress. And then we need to find a different way forward,” he said.

Beira’s comments came as the conflict between Israel and Hamas entered its third week. The fighting has left more than 1,400 people dead, including hundreds of children.

The international community has called for a ceasefire, but both sides have so far refused to comply.

Beira’s call for a peaceful resolution to the conflict has been welcomed by many who fear the human toll of the fighting. It is also a reminder that the United States has a role to play in promoting peace in the Middle East.
