The 14th-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels suffered their first loss of the season, falling to the unranked Villanova Wildcats, 83-81, in overtime in the semifinals of the “Battle for Atlantis.” Despite season-high scoring efforts from freshmen Harrison Ingram (20 points) and Cormac Ryan (18 points), North Carolina struggled to contain the Villanova Wildcats’ Eric Dickerson.

“In the end, Eric Dickerson kicked our tail,” North Carolina head coach Hubert Davis said after the game.

Ingram, Jaylin Withers and Elliot Kaldor were all ejected from the game. Graduate student big man Armando Bacot also struggled, both defending Dixon and failing to make an impact on the offense.

Despite the loss, Davis remains optimistic about the team’s potential.

“Obviously,” Davis explained, “we’re disappointed that we didn’t win.” But I’m proud of the effort of these players. I thought they were competitive. I think when it was time to make a play, they made a play. We just didn’t do enough. This is a great learning opportunity for us to grow and move forward tomorrow and the rest of the year.

North Carolina will face a tough schedule in the coming weeks as they play No. 7 Tennessee, Florida, No. 5 Connecticut, No. 16 Kentucky and Oklahoma.
