Primoz Roglic’s Tour de France Victory: Focus, Not Obsession

3 min read

Primoz Roglic has shared his expectations for the new season with Bora-hansgrohe, emphasizing his focus on the Tour de France. Despite the disappointment of losing the 2020 Tour de France, winning the Tour de France is not an “obsession” for him, which he described in an interview as “the responsibility of taking the victory.”

Roglic has triumphed three times at the Vuelta a España, and was crowned overall winner once at the Giro d’Italia – but the Tour de France is still missing from the Slovenian’s letterhead.

Should he also achieve the longed-for triumph in the Grand Loop, he would join a select circle. So far, only seven riders have managed to win all three Grand Tours.

According to his own statements, Roglic – who will be working for Bora-hansgrohe from next season – would be able to retire without the iconic yellow jersey.

“I wouldn’t say that winning the overall Tour de France is an obsession of mine. I’ve already won a lot, and even if I stopped right now, I’d be very proud of what I’ve achieved and what’s happened,” the 33-year-old said.

Despite that composure, he said it’s still “my responsibility to do everything I can to win, to have no regrets and to be proud of what’s happening.”

He said this mindset strengthened him especially after the dramatic finale of the 2020 Tour de France. Back then, Roglic squandered his 57-second lead over Tadej Pogacar in the time trial on stage 20 and had to settle for second place.

“I I could have closed the bag, so it was hard to still lose,” Roglic explained. “But when I look back, I have to be happy about it, because after that I won many races,” he underlined.

“Maybe I could have won the Tour, but maybe then I wouldn’t have won all the things I won,” the 2020 Olympic time trial champion highlighted, “So the 2020 Tour actually gave me a lot. It always depends on how you look at things in life.”

Roglic emphasized the value of maintaining a positive outlook, even in the face of disappointment. He stated, “While it’s natural to feel disappointed, it’s also crucial to extract something positive from it and focus on the future. We have the ability to shape our own destinies.”
