After the match, Ten Hag credited his side’s “resilience and determination” to come from behind twice to seal a dramatic win.

“The first 35 minutes, we showed again that the future of this team is very bright,” he said. “

“There is huge potential. We have to get it out and get consistency. The first 35 minutes was very pleasing. They are great characters and the determination we see again.

“The team showed resilience and determination to win this game. We’ve had so many setbacks. We are very strong mentally.”

After Scott McTominay gave United the lead in the first half, quickfire goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Mohamed Salah put the visitors in front.

Antony levelled the match in the dying minutes to send the tie into extra-time, but Liverpool restored their lead when Harvey Elliot’s long-range effort deflected beyond the outstretched arms of Andre Onana.

Marcus Rashford and Diallo both found the net in the second half of extra-time to send Ten Hag’s side to Wembley.

“I think the first 30, 35 minutes were the best minutes of our season,” the Dutchman said.

“We were really there as a team, but then there were gaps in between the lines and you can’t allow this against Liverpool, they’re a very good team, one of the best in Europe, and then they outplay you.

“After half-time, it continues and we had to change. We took risks and we went into one against one and the players did wonderful.

“The mentality and the attitude was so great and they had a strong belief to win this game. They went for it and they got it.”

Rashford missed a golden opportunity to put the game to bed at the end of normal time, but bounced back to score a decisive goal in extra-time.

“He’s resilient, kept going,” Ten Hag said on the England international.

“Normally he’s finishing those moments. He gets disappointed but he kept working and kept going for chance after chance, and that also inspired the other players.”

Man Utd will face Coventry City in the semi-final following their sensational win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, but Ten Hag is not expecting an easy game against the Championship side.

“If you want to go to the final you have to win it and we have to play our best,” he said.

“Yesterday, we have seen Coventry. Very good spirit, very good mentality, it’s going to be a difficult game but we want to go to the final so we have to prepare our best and play our best to go into the final.”
